Country Classics has over 600 old cars for sale, just off of I-55 in Staunton, IL. They’re not high-priced trailer queens, either - - though there’s a shitload of bondo on many of them, some are quite nice, too . It’s a fun pit stop outside of St. Louis if you’re into that sort of thing. This is just a taste of some of the more odd things I saw (though there’s some really weird stuff I didn’t take pictures of).

“Safe”. Hehe, safe enough for me for sure. I’d rock that, and I love the wheels.

I’ve been through St. Louis several times and never knew about this place.

Errr....they might want to double check their ads. Can’t say I’ve ever heard of Suziki before!

Exit 41 on I55 North, so 41 miles north of St. Louis. They have ~640 cars that are packed *VERY* tightly in sheds for the most part. In at least a few cases, the cars were actually touching each other, I kid you not. I would see a car I wanted to look at a ways down, and would have to look around to figure out how to get to it.

I didn’t see a car over $30k, and most were in the $10-20k range.  So, a lot of older restorations, some with ratty interiors, many with a lot of bondo, but looking good from 20 feet or so.  But there are also some quite nice cars in there too--  potentially a good place to buy a car to just drive as is for a while, and either ditch or do a restoration later, maybe?

That’s weird, but they’re not a high budget operation. The description on the website matches what’s on a Xerox copy I have of their inventory, which also matches what’s written in soap/crayon on the windshield of every car.

And, the cars are all shoehorned into sheds-  some of the cars are *literally* touching each other.

I’ve seen their ads during the car auctions. I always meant to take a look at their site but haven’t done it yet. Might be worth perusing.

Some coo l cars, but if that’s how their operation is run, it sounds a bit sketchy to me....not sure I would want to buy something from them. :(

Their website is pretty terrible, but it does seem to have an updated inventory. Their cars run the gamut from 1920's to malaise, though it’s largely American.

I haven’t seen a car over $30k, and mostly it’s 10-20k. As a result, you don’t see muscle cars, and the vast majority of the inventory has some issues - bondo, or hail damage, ratty interior, or maybe some dents in weird places. But there are some nice cars there, too.

It’s really a more accurate representation of what old cars are/were like than what shows up on the TV auctions.

Everytime we go to St. Louis I forget this place exists. I really need to go over there and check it out.

Nah, I wouldn’t worry about that - - I’ve done some digging on this stuff (because reasons) and I would be WAAAAYYYYY more skeptical about buying an auction car from Mecum or Barrett-Jackson than these guys.

With ANY car this old, you have to do all of your own homework, to figure out what you’re buying. That means crawling around under the hood, under the car, inside the trunk, blah blah blah.  That’s a hell of a lot harder to do with the auction houses than it is a dealer like this. They allow test drives - Mecum will look at you like you’re from Mars if you want a test drive.

OK, I had to Google that - and damn I need to watch that movie again!!!!

And yes, the car in the movie is also a ‘62 (the freestanding *taillights* give it away) :)

As I mentioned to others, the cars are tightly packed together, and they’re generally not pristine examples (it’s basically a collection of 25 footers), but if you’re ok with that, and love old American cars, you’ll be like a kid in a candy store.

Indeed you do. A number of 62 Mopars for your pleasure. And right on the pod taillights:

Hello Mr. Exner. I bet that’s a seriously rare car, moreso than a 62.

Fun to think how dated it looked by 1966.

Kinja'd!!!1

My unscientific brain feels that 58-62 cars are more rare than 55-57 or 63+ cars. And Mopars from that era seem more rare than Fords or GM cars (probably because unibody) . And Imperials are rare from any era (although Country Classics lists 7 Imperials on their website...)

Combine all 3 factors into 1 car?  And make it a LeBaron, to boot?  LOL good luck finding one of those...

Yeah, I suspect the older ones are good rusters, and I think the economy was also slower in 58-61 or so, so maybe less demand.  I am sure I have never seen a 61 LeBaron in person before.

Renault Dauphine. There is one in my area rusting away by somebody’s mailbox. Apparently they are the daughter of a doctor that used to be in our area. He had a thing for foreign cars and used to race a 300sl. Small town doctors back in the day did crazy shit.

That’s an attractive idea if one had a shed or empty garage space. I wouldn’t park one on a street.
